Earth Rangers is the Kids’ Conservation Organization. Through live shows in schools and at community venues across Canada, a national television partnership with YTV and a dynamic online community, we educate children about biodiversity, conservation and sustainability. Therefore, it’s only fitting that we operate in the most efficient way possible.
The Earth Rangers Centre for Sustainable Technology (ERC) is a global leader in energy efficiency and sustainable operations. Certified LEED Gold for New Construction in 2006 and more recently Platinum under LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance, the ERC is currently the highest rated building in Canada. The facility operates at less than 9 kWh per square foot, per year and generates 30% of its energy consumption on-site.
The original energy concept for the ERC was done by TransSolar, from Stuttgart Germany and Bautech developments. The original design provided a strong foundation of leading sustainable technologies including thermal mass, radiant heating and cooling, earth tube ventilation, on-site wastewater treatment and a green roof. Over the years, many of our technologies have been upgraded or integrated with new systems in order to continually stay at the forefront of the green building industry.
This focus on constant improvement in both systems and practices ensures our success and long-term relevance in a rapidly changing industry. Concentrating our efforts on operational practices has allowed us to exceed the original design efficiency of the building by consistently cutting our energy consumption each year.
As a global demonstration site for green building technology and operations, the ERC is committed to education and knowledge sharing through on-site tours and online resources that provide access to live monitoring and real-time performance of all our systems.
